About the Master Plan

A new vision is coming to life at the world-renowned Hotel del Coronado which is in the process of transforming this legendary resort and securing its future for many generations to come. The Master Plan for the hotel is a $400M multi-year, multi-phase plan that when complete in 2022, will have touched every aspect of the property. The centerpiece of the Master Plan is the addition of a new event center, new residential-style villas, underground parking, and a new main entry with a grand sense of arrival. The Master Plan also pays tribute to the hotel’s history, with an unprecedented investment in restoring and preserving industrial buildings (some of which date back to the 1880s) and re-creating the experience of the hotel’s original front porch. Completing the vision, each of the existing guestrooms, meeting spaces, and dining outlets on property will receive a refresh.

Here’s a step-by-step look at implementation of the Master Plan:

COMPLETED IN 2019

Vista Terrace (June 2019)

Completed in June 2019, Vista Walk was relaunched as Vista Terrace — an elevated and levelled event space offering panoramic views of the Pacific and The Del’s iconic red-roofed turret. This new outdoor entertaining space, which features the historic Dragon Tree, can host up to 700 guests.

Serẽa (June 2019)

Serẽa debuted in June 2019 offering an upscale, sustainable, sea-to-table experience with coastal cuisine that spotlights the best of the region’s ocean, farms and fields from California to the Baja Peninsula. Created by Clique Hospitality (the boutique hospitality company known for redefining today’s dining and nightlife landscapes), the restaurant features a robust, environmentally friendly menu that includes raw and cooked options — from fresh whole catch, to seafood towers and composed dishes. The menu at Serẽa showcases the comprehensive, complex and expressive flavor profiles of the best fresh fish, intricate seafood and heritage meats the region has to offer, prepared by San Diego native and Executive Chef / Partner JoJo Ruiz.

The Laundry (July 2019)

After serving as the Hotel’s laundry for almost 100 years, the Laundry has received a complete interior and exterior renovation. The brick façade with transom windows has been restored, and the original laundry conveyance systems remain as a tribute to its working history. The Laundry currently serves as administrative space during the build-out of the Master Plan. Future possibilities for this unique and authentic venue include meeting or event space.

North Entry and North Parking Structure (November 2019)

The North Entry received a make-over with a brick entry drive and a new porch with an accessible ramp. The North Entry will serve as the main entrance to the hotel until completion of the Master Plan. The new North Parking Structure provides self- and valet- parking for more than 700 vehicles.

With meticulous attention to historic detail, layers of non-historic additions to the front porch and lobby were removed, restoring this signature element to its original grandeur. A wide veranda offers a place for guests to relax in rocking chairs while enjoying a glass of lemonade in this beautiful historic setting. A second set of entry stairs (which originally served as the ladies entrance) were re-created and an improved accessible ramp was added. Non-historic windows were also replaced with period-appropriate windows with red sashes, and 17 stained glass windows, once lost to time, are being re-created and installed in their original locations. The existing original stained-glass Coronation Window has been rehabilitated and returned to its original location on the second floor, surrounded by intricate brickwork. Additionally, the Front Porch restoration included a refresh to The Victorian lobby with an expansion of the lobby floor space, the historic wood was stripped and re-stained its original color, the iconic birdcage elevator received mechanical upgrades, wood beams throughout the lobby were reinforced with steel, a new period-appropriate wood parquet floor and carpet were installed, and all fixtures were recreated based on the originals of the Victorian era. A new crystal chandelier inspired by the original that graced the lobby in 1888 has also be installed.
