History
BUILT IN 1888
Hotel del Coronado’s lobby was originally called the Rotunda and was primarily for men – complete with a cigar and newsstand, spittoons and tiled floors. An early social hub, women would watch the action from the Ladies Gallery above.

Restoration
COMPLETED AUGUST 2021
As part of the project, the intricate original woodwork was carefully hand-stripped and stained its original color, wood beams throughout the lobby were reinforced with steel, the space was expanded to its original size, and Victorian elements were returned. The birdcage elevator received extensive mechanical upgrades with a final mesh grate to match the original coming in fall 2021. The new chandelier of hand-blown glass and crystal embellishments was inspired by the original design.

Future Use
The Del’s newly restored Victorian lobby will continue to welcome guests from around the world. Its timeless grandeur, detailed woodwork, and historical details will be preserved for generations to come.
